Southwestern is host to the Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads, Inc. as part of the career education for kindergarten through fifth grade. The program’s mission is “to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, understand business economics, and be workforce ready.”

Rich in heritage, Southwestern was originally the high school for African-Americans in the Holland area. When the school division realigned its zones and student population, Southwestern became a middle school and finally an elementary school. Through all these changes, the school has provided a healthful, quiet atmosphere conducive for learning.
