Reaching new heights from the hard work of our administration, faculty, staff and students, Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary continues to excel with the assistance of the Reading First grant, which provides $225,000 a year for the next three years. This grant focuses on reading in grades K-3 and has been a big part of the success of the school.

Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary School opened in 1998, named in honor of Mack Benn, Jr., the first African-American superintendent in Suffolk Public Schools. It houses a full-size gymnasium, art and music laboratories, a computer lab, and a media center equipped with a technology lab.

Maintaining high standards for academic success is a continuing goal at Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary which is exemplified in our motto, “Dive Into Our Ocean, It’s The Ocean of Success.”

The students and staff at Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary support a variety of charities including the United Way, March of Dimes, and the Suffolk Education Foundation.

Several incentives are offered to highlight student achievement. These incentives are: Marlin Award (Kindergarten), Platinum Honor Roll (All A’s), Golden Honor Roll (A’s & B’s), B.U.G. Club (Bringing Up Grades), Caught Being Good, Student of the Month, Accelerated Reader Program, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and the President’s Award for Educational Achievement.

Shining Stars
Target Distribution Center awarded the school a grant of $1,080 to assist with Family Reading Night held each month. The money helps provide bus transportation for students and parents.
Carolyn Stevenson, Title One teacher, was voted the school's Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008.
WalMart awarded the school a $1,000 grant.
Rachel Summers, music teacher, was voted the school's Rookie Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008.
Ms. Oliver-Kee, a fifth grade teacher, was awarded a grant from the Suffolk Education Foundation to initiate a Reader’s Theater.


 

2008 Test Scores
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology.

The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. The 2008 benchmark for elementary grades is a 75% pass rate in English, 70% in math, 70% in science and 70% in history.
